Recently, India has made a request to its neighbouring nation Nepal to re-measure the height of Mount Everest in order to find out any changes caused by the earthquake of 2015. According to the report, Nepal has rejected the request from India and the Director General of the Survey Department, Ganesh Prasad Bhatta remarked that the Survey Department of Nepal would conduct the next measurement on its own in the year of 2019. The Director-General of the Survey Department also remarked that Nepal might ask for help from neighbouring states like China and India for the same.
The earthquake of 2015 has affected the landlocked country and changed the basic landscape of the nation. He also added that China has not yet offered to help them out. The Surveyor General of India, Girish Kumar has informed that Nepal had not made any response to the request from India. Earlier, the Ex-Surveyor General Swarna Subha Rao had stated that a squad from India would make a visit to Nepal in order to re-measure the tallest peak in collaboration with its government.
The satellite data has revealed a significant change in the landscape following the earthquake; few scientists also stated that there was a chance that the height of the peak might be reduced as an outcome. Nepal has never measured the height of Mount Everest and the official it accepted height of the peak he is 8,848 metres or 29,029 feet that are measured by Indian surveyors in the year of 1954. As per the report from Washington Post, the measurement of the peak is like a badge of honour for the landlocked Himalayan nation as it is one of the nations to make a claim to the tallest mountain in the world.
