A  16 digit number will be randomly generated as the virtual ID that would provide limited details like name, photograph and address to the authorized agency. UIDAI also clarified that the virtual ID will be a temporary and revocable 16 the digit and random number that would be available from March 1, 2018. From June 1, 2018 it would become compulsory for the agencies to accept the virtual ID from the users.  According to the statements of a UIDAI circular, Aadhaar user could use the Virtual ID in the place of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or KYC services are performed. Authentication may be performed using the Virtual ID in a similar manner like using Aadhaar number.

The decision indicates an initiation to strengthen the privacy and security of Aadhaar data.  Users would have to visit the official website of UIDAI and they would be required to follow instructions for generating the virtual ID.  The virtual ID would be valid for a particular span.  The decision would be helpful in for different agencies as they would get freed from the burden of keeping a huge collection of Aadhaar data.
